What can DJs learn from Lebron James

Don’t Listen to the Doubters
As long as you are achieving success, there will always be people out there who are trying to deny your achievements. Everyone wants to be an expert on your life instead of worrying about their own. You know who they are, because they always describe other people’s accomplishments with “yeah, but…..”. Remember, you will always be your biggest advocate and the decisions are your own. Never let anyone else talk you out of achieving your own goals. Just because some one has an internet connection, doesn’t mean they have a say in your life.

Adapt your Game
Venues change, people change, crowds change, you must be able to adapt to the situation around you. As a DJ, reading the room is paramount to your success. Cleveland was down 3 games to 1 and had to make adjustment to win the championship. If you are playing a room and the crowd is not feeling it, you must be able to pivot and hit them with a new strategy that will get them excited.  The great Bruce Lee said it best, “You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”

The Power of Obsession
Lebron James is not naturally gifted, nobody is. Hard work and the will to improve will always trump anything you are born with. If you want to improve, put in the work to get better. If you are not happy where you are at, put in the effort to change. If you want to conquer the DJ World, you must first conquer yourself. Here is a quote Lebron posted from Connor McGregor.

I’m obsessed!! Straight up #StriveForGreatness #AndThatsWhyImNeverSatisfied

Know Yourself, Know Your Worth

Lebron James has led an NBA team to the finals for 7 straight years. No other current player in the NBA has that resume. He is the most valuable piece of any NBA team in modern times. As such, he commands a Max Salary. He has a structured deal that allows him to opt out each year and re-sign at the current NBA Max salary.  This is just smart business. He is not desperate for clients, they are desperate for him. As a DJ, building your reputation allows you to command higher salaries. Be the Most Valuable resource your clients has ever seen so they realize how much they need you.   If you start to get booked on more gigs than you can handle, then it is time to raise prices. The more valuable you are to people, the more you can charge them.
